Match : Pakistan vs New Zealand 1st Test day-1

It is a series between teams ranked sixth and eighth in the world and given the battle for the wooden spoon, it could turn out to be an exciting encounter. It is Pakistan’s poor record in 2010 – both on and off the field – that make them second favourites (9/4 at BetFred) as compared to the offer of 6/4 (Blue Square) for a New Zealand win.

However, under their new Test match captain, Misbah ul Haq, things did look much improved as they held South Africa to two successive draws in the Middle East. New Zealand also had an impressive couple of draws in India but lost the third game of the series recently.

In the South Africa series, it was captain Misbah (11/2 at SportingBet) who twice steered the team out of trouble. Again, in the warm-up game against a full-strength New Zealand side, he scored a century even as the rest of the batsmen failed. However, he will need the support of the former captain Younis Khan (4/1 at BetFred), who hasn’t been at his best on this tour so far, in the T20Is. Test match cricket is a different kettle of fish and it should suit him to build a longer innings.

How the inexperienced opening pair of Taufeeq Umar and Mohammad Hafeez go about their business seeing off the new ball will go a long way in assisting the middle-order.

New Zealand will depend on Brendon McCullum (15/4 at Stan James), to give them the kind of start that could push the Pakistani bowlers on the backfoot. McCullum has taken to the opening slot in the five-day version as well and his batting in the warm-up game was exemplary. Tim McIntosh (6/1 at SkyBet) should be his opening partner with Martin Guptill (5/1 at SkyBet) and Ross Taylor (15/4 at Stan James) down the order.

The home team will also go in with a new wicket-keeper, Reece Young while the bowling line-up will have Chris Martin sharing the new ball with Darryl Tuffey in all probability.

If the rain keeps away, it could be a hard-fought encounter between the two sides and the side which can bat better in the bowling-friendly conditions should come out on top.
