The Five Doctors was first broadcast in 1983 and proved the last time we saw Sarah Jane Smith for over 20 years. But in 2007 she launched her own investigation into mysterious events at Deffry Vale High School, a place that was hiding much more than she suspected. This mission brought her into contact with a youthful-looking figure who used a familiar name - John Smith...
Although she didn't realise immediately, it was the Doctor. When the Time Lord revealed his identity, Sarah Jane was pleased to see him but her anger was obvious. She felt betrayed by her old friend, abandoned and bitter that she had been left to a life on Earth whilst he continued to swing amongst the stars. The presence of the Doctor's new companion, Rose Tyler, didn't help matters and the two women initially fell out, trading barbed insults and dark glares.
Undeniably, Sarah Jane Smith had changed. She was still a journalist and always on the look out for stories and trouble, but now there was something of the loner about her. She'd remained unmarried and apparently childless and even K-9 Mark III had broken down. Unwilling to reveal his advanced technology, she'd been unable to repair her old comrade.
But the Doctor's return injected vigour and meaning into her life and as she fought by his side she gradually realised that the adventures she had enjoyed across the universe could be continued on her home planet. She didn't need the Doctor or space travel to live a life of excitement. She simply needed spirit, something Sarah Jane had never lacked! And so when the Doctor invited her to step back onboard the TARDIS and join him again in his crazy travels, she declined.
Instinctively she knew her future was on Earth. With a new version of K-9, she prepared for more adventures... The TARDIS had gone but back in Bannerman Road, the danger and excitement were back!
Next week: The Bannerman Road era. Plus! If you missed the return of Sarah Jane in the fourth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures, visit the website now to catch-up.
