He appeared in the series in 1979 for the Season Seventeen adventure The Horns of Nimon playing Soldeed, the leader of the planet Skonnos and ally of the titular Nimon - his death throe has been considered one of the most 'memorable' in the classic series!

Here we see Graham Crowden "acting" in the Doctor Who episode "The Horns of Nimon". He plays the villainous Soldeed. Crowden was offered the role of the Doctor when Jon Pertwee left the show. Declining due to fears about committing to one role for so long, Tom Baker ultimately took up the Doctor Who mantle. Thank God.
