When freelance journalist Sarah Jane Smith infiltrated a high level think tank to investigate the disappearance of top scientists, she could not have dreamed that she'd get more than a single story from her research. But from the moment she met the Doctor - a mysterious and cheeky genius who had his own ideas about what happened to the scientists, she was plunged into a world of danger and discovery that would change the course of her life.
Sarah Jane first encountered the Third Doctor. She initially mistrusted him and although he seems to have taken to this feisty young journalist immediately, she was convinced he was behind the disappearance of the scientists! After she witnessed the Doctor defeating a Sontaran in medieval Britain, saving the scientists in the process, she realised the Time Lord was a defender of humanity, always willing to risk his life to help others. But more than this, the Doctor shared her sense of adventure and curiosity about the universe and whether they were facing Daleks or dinosaurs, they forged a brilliant partnership - firm friends and fearless travellers on a non-stop tour of the cosmos.
When the Doctor regenerated after a battle with the 'eight legs' of Metabelis 3, it took Sarah Jane a little time to get used to the Time Lord's new personality. But their friendship thrived and if anything, she became even more invaluable to the Doctor. She was able to coax him out of bad moods and her single-mindedness was helpful when he became beset with doubts, as in Genesis of the Daleks where she urged the destruction of his greatest foes. She was a willing fighter on the front line, and it was her bravery, for instance, that led to the defeat of the evil Wirrn on Space Station Nerva.
Indeed, for Sarah Jane, it must have felt like her life in the TARDIS would never end. But then came the summons... The Doctor received a telepathic message forcing him to return to Gallifrey. Unable to take his human companion to his home planet he dropped Sarah Jane off in a suburban side street, a far cry from the exotic alien cities and mad, magnificent worlds they had seen together. As the TARDIS dematerialised and she was left alone, Sarah Jane might have believed her adventures were drawing to a close. Little did she know, they were only just beginning...
