Sarah Jane Smith was back in Britain and as the TARDIS faded from our world it must have felt like the Doctor was fading from hers... The Time Lord was heading home and so was she, gathering her bags and her thoughts, looking forward to a life without time travel.
We can't know for certain what happened to Sarah Jane immediately after the Fourth Doctor dropped her off, back on Earth, but we caught up with her at Christmas, several years later. She was pretty much unchanged, still travelling and never in one place for long - still a freelance journalist with an eye for a good story and a nose for trouble. Sarah Jane Smith was re-acquainting herself with her family, visiting her Aunt Lavinia - a character first referenced in The Time Warrior. But her relative wasn't home and Sarah Jane grew suspicious about the unexpected absence... But before she could investigate she received a present from the Doctor... K-9 Mark III.
A new partnership had been formed - Sarah and K-9, and although she couldn't guess it at the time, their friendship would become a bedrock of her life. Their collaboration was immediately put to the test as Sarah became embroiled with the evil schemes of a gang of local witches. Together the duo were able to overcome the coven and it looked as if Sarah Jane had found another partner in crime...
Some time after this, Sarah Jane was briefly re-united with the Third Doctor in the events chronicled in The Five Doctors. Ironically, this adventure involved Sarah being effectively kidnapped and taken to Gallifrey - the very planet the Doctor had left her for, years earlier. Once again she was face-to-face with Cybermen, by the Doctor's side and as feisty as ever - giving him a hard time about her kidnap even though he wasn't to blame!
Her time on the Doctor's home world was brief but action packed, and at the end of her exploits on Gallifrey she returned to Earth and her old friend, K-9. She had been re-united with the Doctor but had missed her chance to renew their travels together. Would this be the end of the Sarah Jane story..?
